Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ), affects many people each year, predominantly women. It is when the bones, teeth, and muscles of the temporomandibular joint (located in the upper jaw, near the ear) no longer work in proper accord. Many people believe or have been told that the resulting headaches, noises, earaches, or changes in their hearing are due to other causes or are possibly psychological. On more careful examination, a well-trained oral and maxillofacial surgeon can determine that the symptoms are associated with their TMJ's and the pain really exists.

With the advent of arthroscopic surgery, (surgery through a small puncture), open joint surgery is a decreasing necessity. This allows the patient to improve quicker and with less discomfort. The surgery has minimal complications because it is minimally invasive.
