Wisdom teeth are the most troublesome teeth in the human mouth.

These third molars usually appear between a person's late teens and early twenties. However, most of the time human jaws simply are not large enough to accommodate these third set of molars.

If a wisdom tooth is blocked from emerging normally into the mouth, it is called "impacted." The tooth can then be either partially or completely impacted, and can cause problems ranging from pain, infection, and damage to surrounding teeth, to the development of cysts which may evolve into tumors.

The removal of wisdom teeth at a dentist's recommendation can eliminate these problems. The surgery can be done on an outpatient basis in most cases, and normal activities can usually be resumed within a few days, depending on the severity of the procedure.
